Hello,
completely out of the blue, over a period of the last 4 or 5 days,
I experienced symptoms such as
Generic host has encountered errors (svchost.exe )
85 % cpu in services.exe
Unusually slow boot and shutdown.

Then when I turned on the PC today it behaved as if I
had just installed a new ethernet card (that was a clue
to the problem) and it tried to install the driver but failed, even
though I pointed it to the correct one.

I reseated the card in it's PCI slot, but it didn't help.
The prblem wasn't solved until I moved the card to a different
PCI slot. PCI slot gone bad?

Cheers,
Dave
PS onboard sound and ethernet now sharing irq,
but XP doesn'tt note it as a problem in device manager.
I'm running standard PC HAL

When you moved the card to another PCI slot it was redetected on bootup and
the proper drivers were installed. If you had just removed the cards drivers
from device manager, and then rebooted, the same thing would have likely
occurred.
