hidden "formatting" from 2003 docs

I'm a 2000 user....when I view a .doc or .rtf from a 2003 user, there are
small "upside-down L"s with an arrow pointing toward the text. The 03
user cannot see them, hence, she cannot change/remove them.

What are these??? How do I instruct my 03 user to eliminate them?
