Only malware is interested in undoing that setting. Since that malware
has already the control over your system, it may also bypass any anti-
virus.
I've also seen this happen when MSN's software had somehow saved over
46,000 <!!> copies of outgoing mail (for only 50 actual messages). The
directory is visible, but cannot be entered nor deleted with Explorer.
There is no malware on this system; I checked it thoroughly.
The problem is that WinXP (Pro, fully updated) isn't capable of indexing
that many files at once, and freezes solid every time Explorer tries to
access the contents of that directory, for any purpose.
I was able to see the content of the files with a commandline hex
viewer, so I DO know what they are. The directory is too deep to respond
to DOS commands, so DELTREE and the like don't work.
I'll be trying ZTree next time I see that client, and see if it can
delete the surplus files.
Anyway, point being if a temp internet directory has too many files in
it, it CAN behave weirdly without any malware present.
