Which uses less power, and is hibernate the same as shutdown ??
Thanks

Hibernate and No.

Standby (Sleep is the domain of Windows Vista) is where the hardware is
powered down to a minimum energy state. In particular the RAM memory
remains powered by the +5vSTBY power line and retains what you were doing.
Hence you can fire up again and carry on exactly where you left off (but
never rely on this - always save your work before going to standby).
Microsoft claim that Vista's 'Sleep'mode uses less energy than Standby. My
measurements suggest that they are exactly the same.

Hibernate is essentially the same thing as standby, but with the added stage
that the contents of the RAM memory are written out to a disk file as part
of the hibernate process. The machine then completely powers down (exactly
the same as shut down). On rebooting, the BIOS checks the hard disk for the
presence of the RAM image and if it finds it, loads it into RAM and then
proceeds as for recovery from Standby.

Some BIOSes set a flag in the CMOS memory rather than actually look for the
file but the effect is the same. This doesn't make a difference unless you
are in the habit of swapping primary hard disc drives. Many HPs and Compaqs
use a flag.
