Hi..

I am atttempting to work on a friend's computer and cannot get it to boot.
The reason he sent it over was for the fact it wouldn't boot and the above
error is listed. Can anyone help?

Boot to the Recovery Console and delete hiberfil.sys. Once in the RC, at the
command prompt type the commands below, Note: The up arrow I used in the commands are
spaces.

attrib ^ -r ^ -s^ -h^ hiberfil.sys and press Enter
del^ hiberfil.sys and press Enter
exit and press Enter

If hibernation is used the hiberfil.sys will be recreated in C:.

Control Panel | Power Options | Hibernate Tab
Uncheck Enable Hibernate
Click Apply (this will remove the C:\hiberfil.sys file)
Check Enable Hibernate
Click OK (this will recreate the file)

That would work if the machine would boot. As the OP stated:

Hello Brian,
Good steps.
the only thing to add is this needs to be done on both the system and boot
drives if installed to a drive other than the drive the system boots from..
Most of the time C drive is both the system and boot drive but not always.
If the OS is installed to the D drive for example there are actually two
hiberfil.sys files.
The one on the C drive ( system drive contains the boot files) only
contains a pointer(arc path entry) to the hiberfil.sys on the D drive (
boot drive contains the \windows folder).
With that error the problem could be in either hiberfil.sys file.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Thanks Darrell,

I will amend it for future reference to include your scenario.
