I am building a new PC for home, and am having trouble with the
configuration....I need someone(S) to look at the configuration and see if I
missed something....

Antec Sonata Case and 380Watt PS
ABIT AI7 MB
P4 3.2 w/HT and 1 MB cache
1GB Kingston Dual Chan DDR400 (actually KVR400AK2/1GR)
BFG GeForce FX 5200 Video card
2 Raptor 36 GB 10K SATA drives

With everything installed, it powers up , and starts to POST, the little 2
digit POST Indicator, on the MB (I like that!!)counts up, and starts looping
through reset, and count up to C1. The MB Docs say this is some sort of
memory configuration step. recycles with a single Beep.

different memory seems to make no difference.
PCI based SVGA card, makes no difference
Disconnecting everything not needed to get to the BIOS, makes no difference.
Different MB (an ECS-848P) worked the same...
I metered the power leads, and the all seem to be steady, and within specs

I have put many systems together, but not for a while..(maybe 2 years) so
things are quite different, but I thought I had done my home work here, but
apparently not....<sigh>

Any/all help greatly appreciated

did you try one single stick of ram for single channel? sounds like either
a dud ram or board.

Did you remember the extra four-pin power connector required for the
4? -Dave

Yup...I took a 256K stick out of another system here that is functioning w/o
problem....Same result. The MB is designed to accept either single or dual
channel memory...

Mike

Yup...got that one also...I can actually see the BIOS screen for an instant
b 4 it resets....this is gonna drive me to drink....more....:)

OK, I just re-read your post. Try this. Find where the case buttons
connect to the motherboard. Disconnect the power and reset buttons from the
mainboard. Now VERY CAREFULLY (so you don't contact anything else while you
are in there) short the two power pins momentarily to turn the system on. A
small flat-blade screwdriver or similar would work for this.

It's somewhat unlikely that a brand new Antec power supply would be bad,
though not out of the question. But with two mainboards acting the same,
you are down to a case or power supply. There is not much in the case that
would affect it unless it is grounding to the case somewhere it shouldn't.
Or if a power or reset button is sticking or intermittent . . . -Dave

Not a direct answer to the OP's problem, but yes, there can be
something wrong with the case, if rarely. Earlier this year, a
computer I built for a friend had the HDD access light on all the
time. I thought it was the mobo and my supplier sent me a replacement,
but the problem persisted. Turned out the LED wire had had its
insulation cut by a sharp edge in a hidden part of the cabinet and was
shorting to the chassis.

I did leave out that I went through the CMOS reset several times....as for
the rest of the BIOS setup 'stuff', I can't get that far...I do see the BIOS
screen, but it is up for about 1/4 second, before the whole thing resets and
recycles.

Later today, I'm gonna strip it down to the MB and the Power supply, and
work up from there. I just have to figure out how to turn on the PS with out
the switch...I proly have an old Pushbutton switch around here somewhere....
I'll report back if I find anything interesting....

I did forget to mention , that I had done the CMOS reset thing a couple of
times also. As for the other BIOS setup 'Stuff', I can't get that far....I
do see the BIOS splash screen for just an instant, before it resets, and
recycles....

Later tonight, when I have some cycles, I'm going to strip it down to the
bare MB, and power, and build it up one thing at a time, to see if I can
isolate it any further....stay tuned...
