Hey all you smart people: Can I reset TCP/IP after repair of XP?

I searched some of the past posts but couldn't find a specific answer.

I've managed recover from a "boot-loop" problem I had (which I believe was
result of AdAware not completely removing some spyware stuff) and am unable
to connect to my ISP. I have XP Pro with SP-2 and a 3Com cable modem with
Charter as ISP.

Although properties in Network says modem is working ok, "Status" lists as
"limited or no connectivity". When I try to "repair" the connection, I get
an unable to renew IP address message. If I run an "ipconfig /all" from
command prompt, I get one of those 199.#.#.# addresses which I know isn't
right.

I've tried the usual switching cables, modems, usb ports, etc from another
working system but still no luck.

The guy that built my PC says I probably have to do a complete HD wipe and
total reinstallation of everything.

I've "googled" this and come up with a couple of different possible fixes.
One is a program called "Winsock XP Fix" and the other is from the Microsoft
site and involves doing a TCP/IP reset using the "Netshell" utility.

I'm obviously in over my head here but sure don't want to go through a total
re-install of my whole system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center".
2. In the Search box type: TCP/IP , and hit enter.

This probably has nothing to do with what you're experiencing, but since
we both use Charter, and the tech who recently gave me my config for XP
thought the settings we had to use[to connect] were an anomaly, I
thought I would mention it, FWIW. :)

I am not using XP-Pro, and have an Ambit modem, but SP2 is installed and
for my Charter connection to work, I have to have "MS Client" enabled
with TCP/IP in the network connection setup. No one at the Charter
forum could explain to me why, but I can't connect without it... and I
do not need it otherwise. [BTW this is a direct connection, no router.]

I also have a direct connection to Charter. Anyway, I fixed the problem.
I downloaded that "Winsock XP Fix" program and it fixed it in 5 minutes. I
had spent days trying everything I knew. Even the guy that built my PC was
convinced I had to wipe the HD and reinstall.
I don't know what this program does but it reset my TCP/IP settings and
all's ok now.
