I hope this info helps some of you that had the same problem as me that was
driving me crazy for just about a year.

If you enter a help inquiry and you never get any replies from the Microsoft
Knowledge Base... and/or your "did you know..." never updates, try this
solution:

DAP (Download Accelerator Program) is the problem, you don't have to
uninstall it, you just need to uncheck the IE integration from the options
menu and BAM! You get your online search capabilites back.

You can still download with DAP by right-clicking and clicking "download
with DAP" through IE, and it works perfect.

I hope those with this same problem can see this post! It was driving me
NUTZ!

Take care all...

imtigger,

Although you didn't reply directly to my post regarding Help and Support
Center search issues, your post follows mine and deals with the problem. In
fact we posted some issues back in August for the same problem.

I do not have DAP or any download manager installed. I get some (41)
responses but not as many as I think would be available if KB Search was
working correctly. I just reformatted my HDD and started over and I have the
same problem, so something else must be causing it. I did not try Help and
Support Center before I installed SP2 so I don't know if that is the cause or
not.

Thanks for your response.

Sorry if you were confused by my post... it's funny cause the timing caused
a misunderstanding. I wasn't responding to your 'issue' re: 41 responses.
I was basically trying to help other people with that "old" issue that we
had discussed back in Aug.

The issue for me was never resolved then out of the blue, some guy overseas
contacted me and gave me the DAP solution and it fixed it perfectly. I was
elated that it was finally fixed AND that the solution was so simple! Then,
at 2am (or so) after fixing this 1-2 year pest of a problem, I came to this
board to let others know how it was easily fixed.

You just happened to have posted your "new" problem to these boards just as
I was posting my solution to your 'old' problem. Quite a coincidence I'd
say! Weird!

Now... on to your new problem: I'll look around myself and see what I can
come up with for the return of only 41 results... I as well have the same
problem, but I don't really see it as a problem yet because usually only the
1st 10-15 results have anything to do with what I'm looking for. If I need
more in-depth results, I go directly to the MKB on the web.

Let me know if you solve that, I'll do the same. Maybe it has something to
do with DAP, or in your case, some other type of download program.... OR a
program that integrates itself into IE. I believe THAT is where the problem
was linked with Download Accelerator. Therefore, it could be ANY program
that integrates itself with IE that could be causing the trouble for the Help
and Support Center.

Maybe you could 'try' to uninstall IE completely, then do a fresh re-install
of IE? ... or maybe install Firefox instead and see if that makes a diff???
Just some ideas. It seems IE causes the trouble for Help and Support Center.

Good luck!

Definitely a longshot coincidence. Anyway, thanks for the help. You are
right about the responses over about 10 or 15 not usually being much help,
but its the idea that it is not working correctly and needs to be fixed.

Your idea that the problem might be another program that integrates with IE
is very interesting. I touched on that by disabling all the add-ons in IE but
went no further with it. Now I think I'll investigate more thoroughly, as you
have suggested. I'll get back to you with any results. Thanks again.

OK, here is what I figured out... 40 returns on the KB search is probably all
there is. I had an "interesting" day trying to figure this out. Just when my
computer seemed to be functioning smoothly, I decided to tempt fate and
remove SP2 to see how many returns came back with XP SP1. Let's just say it
all went downhill from there. Without going into all the depressing details,
I just got operational again today. One should not tempt fate or mess with a
computer that is running well. Anyway, under SP1 I only got 40 results also,
so I'm beginning to think that I am imagining getting more. Anythings
possible, I guess. Bottom line... I'm happy with 40 too. End of story for me,
unless someone else figures out how to get more. I am burned out on this.

Oh, by the way... If you ever find you have to restore a backup that was
created with XP SP2, it will NOT restore under XP SP1! That is, you cannot
reinstall SP1 and the do a restore from there (which was backed up with SP2).
It will not work and will give you a couple of gray hairs in the process. You
must install SP2 first, then the restore goes ok.
