he can't stay online for more than a few minutes, so i
post on his behalf.

things were going ok, i had him uncheck the program from
startup, download the patch and instructed him to restart
in safe mode to install it...

when he tried to install the patch, however, this is the
message he got:

"set up could not verify the integrity of the file
update.inf make sure the cryptographic service is running
on this comp"

this sounds worriesome...any suggestions? btw, his comp
is still rebooting regularly. help?

Try this:
1.. Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
2.. Double-click Services.
3.. Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.
4.. Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.
5.. Install the patch again, if the problem persists, go to Step 6.

6.. Click Start, and then click Run.
7.. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
8.. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

9.. Type exit to close the command prompt, and then install patch again

To stop the reboots: Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc. Scroll down
to Remote Procedure Call (RPC)/Logon/First Failure/Restart the Service.

Then close Windows Explorer, End Process in the Task Manager for
msblast.exe, run the edit on line 257 then run the patch listed below it:
