The scenario is that I would like to help family members with computer
issues using a remote desktop connection over the internet. The connection
I have is a 56Kdialup and the other connection is DSL. Is this possible to
connect through the internet and if so how do I set up both machines so I
can take control of the other one?

I don't know about Remote Desktop from MS, but
Remote Office is being used exactly for that purpose.

You can find Remote Office here:

Sure...you have a couple of choices...

1. If both you and the family member are running XP (Pro or Home) you can use Remote Assistance...

2. If the family member is running XP Pro and you are running something other than XP, ie. W2K, Win
ME, Win 9X, then Remote Desktop is an alternative.
