I have been having similar problems. I get various error messages when I try
to open Help and Support, including the following:

'Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not
running. To fix this problem, start the service named 'Help and Support'.
Well, duh. How can I fix the problem by opening Help and Support when that's
what the problem is - I can't open it?

I also get another error, 'Could not start the Help and Support service on
local computer. Error 1083: the executable program that this service is
configured to run in does not implement the service.

This service depends on the following system components: Remote Procedure
(RPC)'

Various other files won't open and I'm sure it's related but I'm not
computer savvy enough to have any idea what the connection might be.

My husband has the NY Times crossword. When he tries to open the crossword
to send it to 'Print' he gets one of those vague errors and can't open it.
We have two computers and my ancient one across the desk opens the crossword
without a problem. I wonder if this is a Direct X problem? I have no idea
what Direct X does. But I also can't open msinfo32.exe from Run. I've tried
doing system restore and got it back to before I'd installed my latest HP
software but still couldn't get it to run.

I just can't see paying Microsoft $35.00 or whatever to help me fix an
obvious bug in their system. Surely there's some way of hunting down the
cause of this problem and reinstalling Help and Support? I've put in a
couple of full days trying to fix this and I'm getting fed up. I have the
two computers networked and I managed to do the networking after days of
struggling. I'd just reinstall Win XP if I could somehow preserve the network
settings. Is there a way to do that? I didn't know what I was doing when I
set up the network last time so I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to do
it again.

I really do need help or I'm going to go around the bend.
Thanks, Geri

Its means go into 'Services' (type 'services.msc' from a run box, or goto
Administrative Tools from the control panel and select Services). Find Help
and Support. Double click it select start. Also make sure that its startup
type is set to Automatic.
