If yours was a retail version, see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[ln];326246.
But if it was an OEM version, Microsoft won't support it and
you're probably out of luck. However it doesn't hurt to try
asking the OEM you bought it from if they can replace it.

Small charge, $15 or so, but they did it. I couldn't get the OEM to
provide a replacement. Granted this was a number of years ago.

Thanks, Doug. It was my understanding that they didn't do that,
but if you say they did, I believe you.
Perhaps they used to do it, but no longer do. Anyone else have
any recent experience with their doing this?

Doug Knox MS-MVP said:In my case, and this was before I was an MVP, it was more an issue of
refusing to take No for an answer. I told them I had a valid
license, gave them the number, told them who the manufacturer was,
and all the steps I'd taken to get a replacement. When you don't get
a satisfactory answer, ask to speak to a supervisor. It may not
work, but then again, it may![]()

Yup. It certainly never hurts to try.
From the way you describe it, what they did for you may have been
against official policy, but it was easier than arguing with you.
