When I take the adapter out of my computer it shuts fown
instead of using the battery, what do I have to reset?

It could be that the battery is not fully connected as well. Remove the
battery and plug it back in firmly. Second, it could also be your power
settings that are just not working properly. Check your BIOS settings
for Power as well as Windows settings for Power. Also, last question,
does the laptop actually turn off, or does it suspend/hibernate?

I was going to suggest that the OP look at the power lights that indicate
charging, but in the case of a bad connection or failed battery, there is
little point.. the best way is to have the system checked to see if it is
charging.. sometimes the actual connection requires cleaning up.. battery
care is an issue here too.. instructions for battery care used to suggest
that occasionally the battery is completely discharged and recharged.. many
do not do this because they do not realise how rechargeable batteries work,
and for some reason all of their own, they choose not to believe the printed
word..
