I am trying to type my resume' and I cannot find any type of word document
besides notepad or wordpad. I use to use microsoft word on xp, but need help
finding a similar program on vista.

My apologies for asking an obvious question:

Did you install MS Word?
(It's not part of Vista or XP)

My copy of dusty old Microsoft Office 1997 professional works fine in
Vista.

No, I did not know that I had too. I figured that it was an obvious question,
but how do I go about installing MS Word?

Unfortunately VISTA does not come with Microsoft Word, it comes with the
notepad. My XP however had Word with it.

No version of Windows has ever (or is ever likely to) "come with" Microsoft
Word or Office.
None. Ever.
If you bought a computer with Windows pre-installed and Word or Office was
on it, someone either installed it separately or it came with whatever
package deal/bundle you chose from the computer manufacturer.

You'll need to install Microsoft Word on your Vista computer. If you don't
have an installation disk for Word, you'll have to go and purchase one. A
cheaper alternative is to use Open Office, which is a free open source
replacement for Microsoft Office. You can find it here ...

However you wish to phrase it, my old Gateway computer had XP with Word on
it, I did not install it. Therefore, my XP came with Word. Simple as that.

Or alternatively, you have had office installed at some point on a previous
computer, you could always check that computer for software. if you have the
CD's check the version of office isn't OEM (although not likely) then you
should be able to move it from one machine to another (i.e. from previous XP
computer to spanking new Vista machine). That would be just as inexpensive
:) you will need to remove it from the other machine. Check in with your
local Microsoft contact centre if you have any questions.

If not then Doris's suggestion would work.

Or another option would be to get Microsoft Works Suite, which comes with
Microsoft Word. However, if you use Excel or any other Office product then
you might want to get a full "Office Suite".

No, your *computer* came with Word. It was bundled with the *computer* by
the manufacturer.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook,
etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating system. They are,
and always have been, separate applications, that must be purchased and
installed separately.

Open Office is free and some folks like it. I am not sure if it's Vista
compatible yet.

I haven't had any problems with Open Office in Vista.

And to the OP: Wordpad has some choices in terms of fonts, font sizes etc.
If you're in a hurry and don't have time or money to go buy Word or to deal
with Open Office, you might just use Wordpad. Not as many options as using
Word itself, but it's passable in a pinch.
