2000 version of xp home. I have been told to upgrade to pro or media, I went
onto windows site and downloaded the pro trial version but it says the file
cannot be installed on this machine... can anyone help me short of me

If this has happened since you bought the machine, then you have hardware
faults. Nothing you do on the software side (operating systems) will help.
Contact HP tech support and insist that they replace/repair the machine.

There is no problem with XP Home and particularly there should have been no
problem with the operating system image applied by HP at the factory.
