I have an OEM copy of XP Pro that I purchased through Newegg a few months
back. I have finally made time to put together a new PC for myself, however
when I went to install XP Pro and I input the Product Key, it kept saying it
was invalid. I call customer service, they say it is an OEM Key and that I
need to contact the PC Manufacturer. Only problem is that it's me.

They suggested I send an email to tech support, however I can't get through
without a valid product key without paying $35.00. Any way I can get in
touch with them without having to pay the fee? Or better yet, any solutions
to my problem?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Did you call Newegg?

You are probably just entering the key wrong. Pay particular attention 8
and B and other similar letter / number combinations.

There's a reason why the OEM versions are cheaper than retail -- you've
discovered it. :-)

If you can't get the key to work, call Newegg. Mention Microsoft's piracy
hotline if they aren't cooperative -- I am positive that an outfit the size
of Newegg would _not_ be selling questionable copies of Windows, but just
the potential of coming under scrutiny should sufficiently motivate them to
replace your copy.

I agree with Chris, you are probably entering the CD Key wrong, I had one
and I had a Helluva time with it, then I realized it wasn't the letter O it
was a ZERO.

You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully
easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5," or
a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense to
leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation. Also, be
sure that your <CapsLock> is _off_ while entering the Product Key --
this isn't supposed to make a difference, but I've seen it do so, on
rare occasions.

If it still fails, contact the vendor, NewEgg, for assistance.
