This is really driving me nuts, I have a external 2948L external zoom
modem that can not be detected at boot by winxp pro from watching the
modems LED panel lights its initializing but not correctly on com 1,
I've tried changing serial ports to com 2 it initializes correctly but
not detected I installed the modem manually it dials & connects
and then hangs trying to verify username & pws, I also hooked the
modem to a different comp it gets detected and works fine, I also
tested the serial port for any communication errors there was not
any, I put a serial mouse adapter on com 1 and hooked the mouse to it
and it worked fine, so the serial port seems to be working fine and
the modem seems to be also, just not on this comp?? Any help would be
appreciated

What baud rate is your serial port set at? If it's too low, a mouse might
work fine, but not a 56K modem. It's been a while since I've had to adjust
this, but I think the correct setting for a modem is 115K, and the default
is 8K? Those are just wild figures tossed out from memory that is failing
me. -Dave

what are your settings for the serials from within the bios?
How does XP see the connection and does it install the firewall for
the connection profile?

RC232 compatibility would be the issue and whether or not your older
modem plays with well with XP

At least it's a hardware modem.
Is your dialup connection deally set to log on to network?
If it is, that can cause long delays or screw the connection IIRC.

Can you bring the modem up in terminal mode and make it dial manually?

Can you add on L3M2 to the init$ to hear the modem connecting and make
absolutely sure it gets a dialtone? Does the modem answer when you call
the line it's connected to or show any change? Swap phone cords.
If you don't want to use the terminal mode, you can echo AT commands to the
modem from the command line (prompt) like;
echo ATA > com1 to answer the line if it's ringing.
echo ath > com1 to hang back up
echo atz >com1 reset modem to default

Can you bring up the modem in the control panel? (In 2K it's Phone and Modem Options)
Click on the modem and bring up properties, click on the diagnostic tab and hit the
button for Query Modem so you can see if the computer and modem are talking
at all. It will also let you know what conditions the modem is working under.

What's the DTE speed on the serial port?

Dis-connect the modem from the system.
Re-boot to BIOS and make sure the com port/ are enabled.
Re-boot to windows.
Remove any software for the modem from the Control Panel/Add Remove
programs list and any other modem software.
Remove any and all drivers for the modem and or other legacy modems
from the Device Manager using Safemode.
Shutdown and connect modem.
Re-boot.As windows detects it supply drivers disk if required.
Delete all old DUN/Network connections and make a new one(Important).

Check modem is communicating with the system using the Control
Panel/Modems/Diagnostics.If it communicates with the system then the
next part of the chain is the Dial Up networking hence the new Dial Up
Connectoid.

HTH :)
