After downloading windows recommended updates, drivers and
fixes, and rebooting, my computer display now looks like
it is in safe mode. I do not know how to change this.
Can anyone help?

Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.

Sounds like one of the updates was for the video display driver, and it is normal for screen settings to be reset to defaults after updating the video driver. Just right click on the Desktop, select Properties, then the Settings tab. Move the Screen resolution slider to the right to whatever suits you, probably 1024 by 768 or higher. Also increase the Color quality by clicking on the drop down arrow in that section, you probably want 32-bit color for that setting.
