Getting this error with Windows XP, Windows 2000 and getting errors on
install of 2003 (basically tried them all!).

Fresh install of XP Pro on a compaq AP550 733mhz, get to logon screen and
get this:

STOP: C000021a (Fatal System Error)
The Windows Logon process terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
The system has shut down.

I can boot into safe mode no problems but can't see any errors which would
cause this in the logs.
I also can't seem to disable the audio (onboard intel 82801AA AC97), have
disabled in the bios but that doesn't stop the error anyway.

Anyone got any ideas? I am now tearing my hair out!!

Many thanks for the response but this does not help :(
Already looked at this, I don't have goback installed (fresh install of XP,
nothing else on it at all). The other solution was with permissions, again,
nothing has changed. It also happens when installing SP2.

Hi,

Have you tried zero-writing the drive first, then allowing XP setup to do
the partitioning and formatting? Trying to install to a volume created with
a different partitioning utility will sometimes cause this problem.

Yup, the drive has now been low levelled 4 times :(
just looked in the error log again and there is lots of component services
refusing to load (cpu drivers etc etc). Not sure whats going on, the pc
worked fine until recently, decided 2003 wasn't for me and went back to XP
and since then I haven't been able to get an OS to load on the machine. The
drive seems to be fine with no errors (scsi) so it isn't the drive, the
memory checks out okay too. Definitely looks to be a software issue or some
conflict somewhere but I can't find it at all.

Now deleted the accounts and created a test one which has booted up, but
everytime I restart I get the bsod. Very odd. Seems to be corruption of the
user accounts, theres nothing else installed on the machine so no software
causing this, have removed various hardware, (changed video card from agp to
pci, removed the onboard sound and put in a soundcard, removed the network
card and used the onboard, removed the onboard and used nothing etc etc, I
have even tried changing cpu (got another 2 sitting here spare) but not
changed the memory as I don't have any spare for that and it's rambus so
installed in pairs :(........)

Hi,

Sounds very much to me like the proprietary hardware used in building the
Compaq is not going to function with a retail version of Windows. Either a
component is bad, or it relying on support or a driver only available in the
proprietary version of the operating system that came with the machine.

While I would like to think this too, it doesn't explain why 2003 DID work
and now no longer works :s
I don't want to go onto Windows NT, that would be a waste of time as it's
old and most of my software won't work with it :(

Okay, so I think I may have got to the bottom of this problem :s
If I have just one account on the system it logs on fine, if I have two it
crashes out on a bsod. If I change the irq's in the bios some really strange
things start to happen, for instance if I change (for example) the agp
controller and the ethernet controller (both on same irq which I can't
change) then when I boot into windows the activation error comes up in
windows (it's a corporate disk!!) and then reboots. So for some reason the
logon seems to be having problems. There is no conflicts in device manager,
everything has a seperate irq (despite the compaq bios assigning everything
on shared).

This is really strange. ANyone got ANY clues?
