I have a Compaq Presario 715US laptop, purchased about 2 years ago. My CD drive has stopped functioning, and the folks at Compaq say that I might need to replace the same. Along with labor, the total cost comes up to $ 700, and I don't want to spend that money. I have a question, though. I am running Windows XP Pro, SP1. I want to clean up my system. I used an external CD drive to 'clean' install Windows. It went fine, but I lost a lot of hard drive space. Now, even without any program installed, the computer says that total size is 19 GB, but available space is only 9 GB. My question is: can I use 'fdisk' to completely wipe my hard drive clean and then 'clean' install windows from an external CD drive? After 'fdisk', the system usually says OS not found. At that time, if I put in the WinXP CD in the external CD drive, will I be able to install windows? What do I do if it doesn't do it
Please help me, as I am desperate to clean my HD, as there is a ton of uninstallable garbage in it
Thank you
