I am still trying to install XP on the computer but
despite the suggested fixes (below) I remain unsuccessful
has any one got any other ideas

Frustrated Fred

Bobby,

Again thanks for the advice but I am still having the
same trouble. Has anyone got any other ideas?

Regards

only thing i can think of is to disable any onboard devices such as
sound, modem, lan but not onboard graphics if you use this. If you have a
separate pci/agp video card and also have onboard graphics then turn this
feature off too in the bios.

From your original post it seems you have a bad CD disk maybe, are you still
getting that error code. If so there is nothing this newsgroup can do for
you and nothing you can do to fix it.

Fred all
of the above devices

.
when you get to the install after a reboot, press shift
and f10 and type taskmgr.exe and processes and end all
svchost.exe processes then close task manager and type
devmgmt.msc in command prompt and disable sound audio
nic and modem and continue with the install.

Fred,

Let me know if the posts have resolved your issue. I have seen several
causes of this error.
1. Bad RAM - replace
2. Drive overlay - run fdisk /mbr
3. Bad installation CD - replacement or test by copying contents of i386
directory to drive and install from there
4. Overclocked system - reset
