I have an ABIT V17 motherboard with VIA PT800 +
VT8237 Chipset and Serial ATA 150 RAID via southbridge.
I have had it running about 2 weeks, after a complete
re-install of XP due to a blue screen lockup (error
0x000008e, I think, after about the first two weeks). I
just completed all of the Windows XP updates (including
DirectX 9, etc) and two drivers (I don't recall which ones
- I assumed I would be able to roll them back if any
problem). I did not load the SATA driver during this second
XP install due to MS "unsigned" warning - I am not using
the SATA/RAID _ I have a WD 250 Gig HD on IDE 1 Master. I
had loaded the SATA driver the first time, as well as an
unsigned Canon scanner driver. I left those out during the
second install, thinking they were the cause of my first
lockup.
Current Problem: Computer boots only to the "Verifying DMI
Pool... note, It won't go any further, I have taken the HD
out and can read it as a slave in another computer.
When I go in through Recovery console, I can read the
C:/Windows directories. When I try "Use last good
configuration", I get the error message - HAL.DLL is
missing or corrupt. I replaced this file from another WIN
XP Home computer - still the same message.
I am assuming these problems are due to the SATA/RAID
hardware and drivers on this motherboard. I have run the
memory with memtest for hours (on the v17 computer before
this problem), so I don't think thats a problem.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has this
motherboard or similar problem and what has worked to fix
it. I bought the OEM Version of XP with the MB, and MS has
already given me some flack in the second installation
activation. I'm not using the Serial ATA right now, so if
that is the conflict, I can probably wait for a BIOS fix (
I have latest BIOS)< I can't keep loading everything every
two weeks> Any Similar Experience / Ideas ?? Or should I
cut my losses and just go buy another MB for my P2.8 ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
