I know this sounds dumb, but I somehow have deleted both Firefox and Outlook
Express icons from my taskbar. I've tried dragging....tried right-clicking
and using properties, links, etc. But nothing I do seems to bring the icons
back. As I use them constantly (run an online business), could someone tell
me what to do, please?
I apologise for being such an idiot - in advance.

Have you got some in overflow area; look at task bar right hand side
for 2 arrows/click on that.

I see the two arrows, but it doesn't bring those two items up. Rather it
brings up the desktop icons. Which is ok - but I'd still like the other two
icons on their own in the taskbar. Does that make sense?

Check START> SETTINGS > TASKBAR and START MENU

make sure the box that says "HIDE QUICKLAUCH" is not checked

Thanks Caveman, but when I go to start there is no >SETTINGS. Am I looking in
the wrong place??

Gel,

Your 'Quick Launch' needs enabling. That's why dragging to the taskbar
doesn't work. When enabled, if they're still missing, drag the msimn.exe
icon/file located at C:\Program Files\Outlook Express into the Quick Launch
area. I don't use Firefox but the process should be the same from C:\Program
Files\Firefox.
A prior post explains how to enable 'Quick Launch'.

Make a shortcut to the program on the desktop and drag it to the Quick
Launch part of the taskbar.

Thank you, Frank. I tried that, too, but still get the black circle with the
backward slash, even when trying to drag the shortcut icon. What in the world
am I doing wrong??

It is "Show Quicklaunch" and it should be checked.

Is the Taskbar locked?
Dragging to the Taskbar won't work if it is locked.

All fixed....thanks to your help. Once I found the 'right' part of the
taskbar, it was all good.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

I give up (almost) - which is the 'quick launch' part of the taskbar?

Heh.

It's just to the right of the Start button. Make sure your task bar
isn't locked by right clicking on it. Also right click on the task bar
and make sure that there is a check next to Quick Launch at Toolbars -->
Quick Launch.

Alias

Is the Quick Launch bar showing any icons?
Right click a blank spot on the taskbar and make sure "Lock the Taskbar" is
not checked.

You've already gotten good advice on your question. I wanted to add
something about the terminology you're using, which may help answer your
question above.

You asked about the Task Bar, but that's apparently not what you really
mean. The Task iBar s the place where running programs show, where you get a
short bar with the name of the program and an icon. You can click on that
short bar to minimize or restore that running program. You can't put icons
on it or take them off, except by starting and stopping programs (and I
don't think that's what you want to do).

Your interest, I believe, is the place that holds shortcut icons to start
frequently-used programs. It's not called the Task Bar, but is a toolbar of
its own, called the Quick Launch Bar. It's not really the "Quick Launch part
of the taskbar," but because it appears *on* the Task Bar by default, many
people will call it that loosely. It's that Quick Lanch Bar where you want
to add your Firefox and Outlook Express icons.

As I said, the Quick Launch Bar is a separate toolbar, not really part of
the Task Bar, but it appears by default on the left side of the Tak Bar,
just to the right of the Start button. However, because it's a ctually a
separate toolbar, it doesn't have to be there and can be dragged elsewhere,
for example to another side of the screen. One configuration that I
particularly like is to drag the Quick Launch to the left side of the screen
(make sure the Tak Bar is unlocked first, if you try this) where there's
room for many shortcut icons without swhortening the Task Bar itself.
