I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me how to change the programs that I
have running when my computer starts. I think I have to many and is why my
computer takes so long to start. If anyone can help me, please let me know!
Thanks so much!

go to run and type in msconfig click the startup tab and un-check the
programs you don't want to load.

Hope that helps

Could just as easily help to destroy his PC,

Comments such as "un-check the programs you don't want to load" is
dangerously bad advice to be giving in a forum such as this, where
there are many users who are rather naive.

Here is part of my standard response with repect to startup items:

"Please ensure that you fully understand the purpose of a startup
item, how and why it was put into the startup, and the consequences
(if any) of removing it before you make any changes. Some items are
very important for the proper and safe functioning of your computer.

Disabling an item by unchecking it in MSCONFIG should only be done for
testing purposes or as a "last resort" when no other way of getting
rid of the unwanted item can be found."

This is a fairly complex subject, as there are several different
aspects to consider:

1. Viruses, spyware, and other related scumware products.
Make certain your antivirus software is fully up to date, with the
virus defintions not more than a week old, and do a complete virus
scan of your computer. Then get a "second opinion" by doing a free
online virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Next check for spyware etc. Start with a free online scan at
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm and then do a more thorough check and
cleanup as per http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm.

2. Programs that load at Startup:
Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab. Compare the
list of items that are loading at startup with the following checklist
web sites to see what can be safely dispensed with:

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html - has trojan related
items listed

Note: Please ensure that you fully understand the purpose of a
startup item, how and why it was put into the startup, and the
consequences (if any) of removing it before you make any changes.
Some items are very important for the proper and safe functioning of
your computer.

Disabling an item by unchecking it in MSCONFIG should only be done for
testing purposes or as a "last resort" when no other way of getting
rid of the unwanted item can be found.

3. Services that are loaded at Startup.
See http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm for information
about the services that load at startup and advice on how to
reconfigure them.

Good luck
