Help with Search Function

When I go to Start>search and type in what I want to search for, it freezes
up, will not search. How do I fix this? Can I reinstall Windows XP or is
there another way. If I do reinstall XP, will all my data be safe? Another
question, What are the absolutely necessary things to leave on when I check
the items on the start up menu under MSCONFIG? What can I eliminate? How
about something written in Japanese characters which appeared there?
