I have a virus that has totally messed up my computer. I called Dell and had
them run a hardware check, and nothing is wrong with that. So the tech. told
me I have a software issue maybe a virus and that I need to reinstall Windows
XP from the CD that it came with I tried and it didnt work. Can someone help
me with that?

Thanks a bunch,

Kristi

Can you define "totally messed up"? When you reinstalled XP did you do a
complete format of the drive before applying XP?

Allen,

I never got to reinstall the CD it is the one that came with the computer.
When I boot from the BIOS mode it says it cant boot from there using the CD.
I dont know why. When I say messed up , I mean it freezes a lot if I stay
idle to long, and I have to turn it off to make it move. And it takes a long
time to get to the home page once its on, after a cold boot state. I did
talk to Dell and they ran a hardware test and it turned out fine, so he said
its the software. I probably downloaded something or email that had a virus
in it. I cant even use internet explorer and my task manager doesnt work
either. I have to use Mozilla web browser. Do you think you can help?

So you got the XP CD then? You can do either two things to reinstall XP.
First you can go into the BIOS setup and select Boot From CD and put that
option in front of the HD boot order. Second you can run setup from the CD
from inside of Windows. If you are not opposed to reinstalling XP that would
be the practical and most convenient option for you. trying to diagnise and
run utlities with limited experience can be more tedious and time consuming
than to just reinstall XP. If you choose to reinstall XP completely then
make sure you reformat the drive.

Allen,

Yes I have the CD and I did try to reinstall it from the BIOS mode and it
kept saying not a commond try from the F2 key. But when you do it from the
windows version you have to push the F12 botton. So how do you reformate the
drive, and where do I reinstall from within the system instead of from the
CD. Like you said the easier one for me to do. Im taking Computer
Programming in school right now, but we havent gotten this far yet. I have
done lots with computers but no technical stuff like this. I dont guess
there is anyway to walk me through this huh?

Thanks,

Kristi

LOL! When you start programming for a living, let us know what programs
you work on, so we know to avoid them.

Don't mind Kurttrail's comment. He is always good to have in the NG's and
always has good information and offers good advice. Just sometimes he's a
bit insensitive. All in good fun so don't take it personal.

As stated kurttrail you do provide good advice and insight. Her problem
seems to be she cannot boot from the CD nor does she understand how to run
setup from within Windows.

Allen,

What do you mean go offline?

I was referring to if you want to email me direct I can walk you through it.
Your best option is to boot from the CD. You need to get into the BIOS
setup. Most likely the reason you cannot boot from the CD is your boot order
that probably has the HDD in front of the CD if it is even listed. So you
need to change this first. Do you know how to get into the system setup?
Usually it is the Del or Esc or sometimes the F8 key that you need to select
while your system is in the POST and booting up.Depends on what make of PC
you have. What happens when you are in Windows and you insert the XP CD in
the drive and run setup?

Oh ok, sure we can do that but how am I going to have you help me if Im offline. I can get into the BIOS mode not a problem there. So I'll need to know what to do next. You should just call me if you wanted to. It would be much easier. If your comfortable with that.
