Presumably, you are trying to scan negatives, right? In NikonScan 3, at
least, the shadows don't clip as badly in the data as they do in the
histogram NikonScan shows. One thing to try is to set a negative offset in
the master analog gain (to get the shadows better) and use 4x or 8x
multisampling (to better punch through the dense highlights). That takes an
age, though.

Are you sure, though, that your images themselves aren't clipped at the low
and high ends???

hi,

am scanning pos slides. Seems to be clipping a lot in shadows and a
little in highlights.

In NikonScan turn off AutoExposure and the clipping should be gone. Do
note, however, that you will then have to set the exposure manually
using AnalogGain! To turn AutoExposure off make sure you click in all
relevant places (Preview, Positive, Negative). After that you need to
exit NikonScan and restart. Just to be on the safe side, I also turn
the scanner off and wait for its internal memory to drain.

As to VueScan, it's far too buggy to even try to guess what's wrong.

Use media type: Image, if you want to use media type: slide, use
advanced workflow and generic slide. If that doesn't help, try long
exposure pass. And of course use Color balance: None.

There have been some postings recently where you might find additional
information. Look for: "Tweaking VueScan: Loss of Shadow detail" and
"Getting too dark pictures with Vuescan - can't change exposure"

Hi Ruth,

You're most welcome!

I also have bold patches from wrestling with NikonScan but it's all
growing back in nicely now... ;o)
