I'm running Windows XP Pro on an Gigabyte GA-8PE667 Ultra motherboard,
which has the Intel 845 chipset, and a Promise 20276 RAID chip.
It's been running for a while, with only minor glitches, but I just
upgraded from a Pentium 4 533FSB 2.66GHz to a 3.06GHz with hyper-threading.
When I first installed the processor and turned it on, everything booted
correctly, it then told me it had update the system, and requested a
restart.
Upon restarting, when I would click on the username to begin, it would
hang for several minutes. I finally shut the power off and restarted,
same thing happened again. I then turned it off, restarted, but
disabled the hyperthreading in the BIOS. The system then started
properly and showed the new 3.06GHz speed. I ran it for a few hours,
then attempted to re-enable the hyperthreading in the BIOS. This time,
the system would get past the 'loading' message after clicking on the
username, but would hang up shortly thereafter.
What am I doing wrong? I don't want to have to do a complete reinstall,
due to the large amount of data on the system.
Any suggestions?
