We have a router connecting 6 computers to a network printer and to a
broadband connection. None of the computers is able to interact with each
other. I would like to be able to have my laptop and desktop exchange
files. I am running XP Pro, have simple file sharing disabled, and am
running NTFS on both machines. I did not try to use the establish a home
networking connection wizard.

I have set the appropriate permissions in the sharing/security section, but
I am unable to access the other machine, though it appears on the network.

Is there a simple resource that someone can point me to that describes
setting up this kind of connection?

Thanks much!

Make sure that XP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled, as shown
here:

This web site has details on setting network and NTFS permissions.
Both of them must be right to allow access:

Thanks for the help. I'll read this and give it a shot.

I read that article and I believe that things are set right. Let me run the
scenario by you. I have the same login for both computers. I want to share
the My Documents folders on both machines, but only have them visible to me.
I set sharing and then set permissions looking for the logon name I use. On
my desktop, it finds me as \office\login and on the latop it is
\laptop\login. But when I try to connect from one machine to the other, I
get the following message:

--------------------
\\laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if
you have access permissions.

Login failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank
passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions or a policy restriction has
been enforced.

Do the accounts have blank passwords? If so, you need to enable
access by accounts with blank passwords, as described in the article.
