I want to network a desktop and a laptop that are in an apartment that
already has a general wireless building system. I understand that I
could adhoc the two to network, but what I had in mind was to hardwire
the desktop to some type of wireless router in repeater mode and that
the laptop would still be able to network the desktop. Or is just using
the general network and setting up a windows workgroup the way to go?
Thanks for the clarification on if I need routers/bridges or what not!

There are any of several ways you could connect two computers, but depending
upon what specifically you want to do, some will work better than others. What
do you want to do?
1) Access the Internet from both computers.
2) Share files between the two computers.
3) Both #1 and #2.

What network devices do you have on the desktop?
1) Wired (Ethernet).
2) Wireless (WiFi).

Answer each of these questions, and we can proceed.

#3 I'm going to network and have Internet on both

Both units have ethernet cards, but my thinking was to wire the desktop
to an accesspoint or some sort of router and then use wireless card
with laptop
Thanks for giving me some clarification "mapping of the diagram"

OK, that's a start. Your Internet service is a WiFi LAN, but since you want to
share files between your 2 computers, connecting them both to the WiFi LAN, and
simultaneously to each other, will require extra equipment.

You have 2 possible solutions:
1) Buy a WiFi Router with bridging capability.
2) Buy an extra Ethernet card for the desktop, plus a Wireless Access Point.
Then you will have to configure the desktop to be an ICS server.

In your case, I would go with #1. ICS is a poor solution even if you have all
of the equipment, which you don't.

Your best solution will be a wireless router that will work as a bridge. That
is, the WAN side of the router needs the WiFi capability, letting you connect
Ethernet to the LAN (and then to the desktop and laptop).

In your case, I'll refer you to the BBR WiFi forum, where the experts there can
help you choose a WiFi router with bridging capability. You should register to
post there (they won't require you to, but it's to your benefit), and
registration is free.
