I've done this dozens of times, but with my wife's new laptop a simple
thing like joining it to our workgroup has proven to be a pain. The
laptop will not see other computers, or printers. The other machines,
XP Pro and Home mix, work and share printers fine. I can see the
laptop on my machine and my wife's other system, but I can't gain
access to it.

Would anyone know what stupid thing I might have forgotten to do?

Turn off the firewall or at least add an exception for your private subnet.

Have you checked either machines software firewalls to make sure they are not
blocking access? Check any firewall logs and if any networked machine is being
blocked, add the blocked IP to the Trusted Zone in the firewall.

yup, that's the ticket. I forgot to let the firewall know about
everyone else. DAHHHHHHHHHH.......
