IE 6.0.2800, SP1, (you know, I can't get the version info and patches
from the IE About window by selecting it with the mouse and copying it
to the clipboard, to be able to paste it here) all current patches.
Windows XP Pro, all current patches. Norton AV and Firewall 2003.
Months ago, after a rash of attacks from the net, I raised some of
the security levels in IE. I don't know whether that is related
or not, I ONLY mention this because it might be relevant and provide
a clue. But the system has now been repeatedly checked with different
tools and it does not appear that a virus is causing what I'm now
seeing.
But, now I've just noticed:
I see I cannot type into the search box for the knowledgebase at
microsoft.com! I can check all the radio buttons, I can agree to
let each script on the page run, but I can't type a word to search
for into the box. I did find that I can run the search, with no
word to search for, and get to one of the other search pages that
pop up, and still can't type into the text box, but I am able to
paste from the clipboard to get words to search for, so now I use
Notepad and the mouse and cut and paste to be able to search.
And the reason that I discovered that:
I cannot get http://www.alpertron.com.ar/ECM.HTM to work. I can
type numbers into the box, I can ask it to run, the .jar appears
in the Temporary Internet File directory, so it is getting to me,
but it never actually starts running, it just sits there idle.
I've searched the knowledgebase and found that jview.exe is on my
system and appears to be running correctly, that is supposed to be,
according to Microsoft, a good test that the Java VM is installed
and working correctly. I've tried installing the scripting debugger,
I've made sure in IE that all messages related to script errors are
displayed but I see no error from the javascript that says there is
any problem. Folks around the world are successfully using this
web page so I don't think it is just a broken script. I've checked
security and permissions for scripts and for java and they all seem
to be appropriate. I've even tried making that particular site one
of the "trusted" ones, and it appears that it never even starts.
I went and got a little book and typed up my own ten line html file
with javascript in it, ran it, and see the script works in my IE.
So, how can I diagnose why I can't type text into the search box?
And how can I diagnose how to get that web page with the .jar to run.
One person said "well maybe if you just turn off all the security..."
but that sort of sounds like giving away my bank account number,
and he didn't have any evidence that turning off security would help.
Thank you
