I am running Excel 2002 on an NTFS install of windows 2000. I have just
saved a modified excel spreadsheet by accident. Is there any way I can get
the old version back, or is gone for ever?

Cheers

You get your original data back only if you have a backup of the original
file.

You may have a backup if you are on a server and mass backups are regularly
made.

Look for any *.XLK files. If you have set options to always create a backup,
there could be a copy of the original saved as an *.XLK.

Are you running Norton Utilities Protected Recycle Bin? Easy to get an
earlier copy using Norton Unerase feature.

Otherwise...........out of luck, but much wiser......right?

Great advice Gord. Just a question. If he saved the file after modifying
it (using file=>Save), I don't think the file would go to the recycle bin.
Does Norton Utilities capture/protect for this situation?

Tom

It appears that Norton will not capture/protect a file that is being
overwritten through a File>Save in Windows XP

My error in assumption.

I was sure I recovered overwritten files using Norton UnErase under Win98 SE.

I will go there now and check it out. Get back soon to this.

I was partly correct.

The Norton UnErase packaged with SystemWorks for Windows 98 will save
originals of overwritten files. The originals can then be found in the
protected buffer and recovered. Actually can go back many versions of the
same file and pick whichever you want.

The UnErase packaged with Norton Utilities 2002 creates shortcut links only
and is basically useless for recovering overwritten files.

It may be my configuration. I will contact Symantec to see what's up.

Thanks for the information/research Gord. Sounds like a useful capability.
I will have to look into it.
