Help With File Name Extensions

I've been having trouble with naming files on my computer.
It keeps asking me to add the extension on the end of the
file name otherwise it won't be able to open it later.
Without the .txt or .mp3 on the end, the comptuer will ask
me to select a program from a list to open it with. Is
there anyway to name the file without the extension always
having to be on the end? It gets pretty tedious having to
rename expecially when I have to add the extension on the
end. Any help would be appreciated.

When you save the file originally from whatever application you are
using there is usually a File Type menu near where you type the filename
in. If you save as "all files" then you have to give it an extension, if
you choose a particular file type then it should append the file
extension for you.

You shouldn't have to name files you create. Whatever program you create
the file with has a default extension that it puts on your file (some have
options to choose the extension). What program is asking you to add an
extension?
