I need to find some really well hidden parasite files in the system32 folder
and have tried to find them using the DOS prompt from Accessories.

Most switches seem to work but I'm getting invalid responses trying to use
/h *.* and /r *.*.

Am I using the wrong switches or maybe they only work using DOS at start-up.
I have not tried this yet as I want to be certain that I get it right.

If anybody in this NG can assist me to get it right I would be very
grateful. One of the hidden files that I'm trying to locate is pupxpman.exe
which I believe has an associated hidden file.

TIA

Ray

The valid switches depend on which particular command you are using.

For details of which particular switches you can use with a command, type
the command followed by "/?"
eg dir /?

If your example referred to the "dir" command, then try

dir /ah *.*

and

dir /ar *.*

What does /h and /r supposed to do and what command are they supposed to be switches too. You can always read the correct syntax in help. If this is some guess that /h means hidden and the command is Dir then it's wrong. Just /a will do for all attributes. If this is attrib you use - or + signs.

Thanks for your responses.

I am not guessing I am using advice from a professional who said use dir /h
*.* at the DOS prompt.

You're actually going about cleaning this the wrong way. I'd start by
giving this utility from Mark Brown a try:

http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/AntiPuper.exe
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=65072

If that doesn't work, I'd run Hijack This and post your log to one of
these forums (not here, please):

Here are more links connected with this particular malware:

And here are some other malware removal steps that may help:

I'd definitely run through those after getting the Ashampoo garbage off.

Excellent! Can you tell us what procedure you used? This will help
others in the future when they search Google Groups for this problem.
