I have never had the need for this, but I am trying to help my wife at
work. Whenever we go on the menu, this command is "grayed out". Same
at work and at home, so that tells me we are simply missing something
obvious. Does anyone know what we need to do? Thanks.

Compare and Merge is available only for comparing and merging versions of Shared
Workbooks.

See help on shared workbooks for more on how to set up and use.

Note: with shared workbooks you lose quite a bit of functionality.

Sounds to me like you don't have any of these and probably don't need the
feature.

OK I figured out the basics on my own...to set the file as a "shared"
file. I did this, saved it and now have two files that I can get to
merge. I have a more complicated question (at least for me). Lets say
i have $100 in cell A1...someone elde puts $200 into cell A1....can I
merge these where they automatically add up to $300 in cell A!?
Thanks.
