Have you tried their forum ?

Hi Jim

I couldn't find a product specific forum when I Goggled it yesterday. Do you
know that one exists?

Hi

yes it is simple in principle but the queries I have aren't covered in the
help file.

Millie:
While I recall working with the software you mentioned a good many years ago
(it was bundled with Powerquest's DriveImage product as I recall), I really
can't recall the details of working with that program except that (again, as
I recall) its basic function was to keep track of changes made to one's HDD.
So I really can't help you in any meaningful way re using that program.

But truth to tell, as a practical matter that program is really obsolete in
the current XP operating system (OS) environment. If at all possible I would
strongly recommend you look to another, more current type of comprehensive
backup program that would surely be more desirable for your backup needs,
again assuming that you're primarily interested in backing up your entire
system including your XP OS, all your programs & applications, and of course
all your personal data.

I'm thinking here of a disk-to-disk "cloning" type of program (or possibly a
disk-imaging program). Should you want to go that route I do have some
recommendations as to the program I prefer and strongly recommend for most
PC users. Naturally, this being a third-party program, a cost would be
involved to the user. Anyway if you want my suggestions, I'll respond
accordingly.

go to http://www.fssdev.com/default.aspx and check out Casper 5.0
It's well worth the cost

Hi Anna

Thanks for all your information. I had no idea Datakeeper was old and
obsolete. I would appreciate your suggestions for backup software. I do have
Acronis True Image 9 but I've never used it.

I use it, and I'm sure it will take care of all your backup needs quite
nicely.

Do you have an external hard drive? That is the preferred medium to use.

There is a User's Guide. Print it out and follow it step-by-step. You
will probably be able to teach yourself how to use its features. Once
you walk yourself through it once or twice, you'll see that it's fairly
easy to use. That includes automating backups.

For any questions you may have, here is a link to the support forum:

Good luck!

Millie:
As long as you have the ATI program version 9, it surely is preferable to
use that program for comprehensive backup purposes rather than the
Powerquest program. Acronis replaced the version 9 program with later
versions. Their current version is Acronis True Image Home 2009. But the 9
version should suffice for your purposes and you should definitely give it a
try. BTW, in response to a local computer club's request I prepared some
step-by-step directions for using the ATI v9 (and v10) program some time
ago. (I haven't worked with Acronis's latest 2009 version and I believe a
trial version of that program is available from the Acronis site). Anyway if
you're interested in those instructions re v9 so indicate and I'll post
them.

Also BTW, the disk-cloning program I greatly prefer and alluded to in my
original response to you is the same one recommended by "olfart" when he
stated "go to http://www.fssdev.com/default.aspx and check out Casper 5.0
It's well worth the cost." It truly is. For a variety of reasons I find that
disk-cloning program superior to the Acronis products for most users. Casper
also has a trial version (slightly crippled but quite usable) available so
you may also want to give that program a go. I can also furnish you (or
anyone else who's interested) with some details about that program & its
use.
