Hello Helpful Person:

I am currently trying to archive all of the December 2004 mail messages
that reside in a particular folder. Most of the messages were archived
OK, but for some reason, there are a bunch that will not go to the
archive.

Most of these seem to be messages later in the month, like December
24-31.

It doesn't give an error message or anything, it just doesn't archive
them.

Thinking that size was a factor, I copied all of the ones that wouldn't
archive into a new folder and tried it again. But none would archive.
I've never seen this before.

Any ideas out there?

Archiving doesn't work on the received date. It uses the (usually hidden)
modified date. That date is updated any time you move, open, or otherwise
manipulate the message.

By moving them, you've guaranteed that they won't archive because moving
them updates the modified date.

Do you know if there's a limit on the number of messages in a folder?
It seems to max out at around 16,300. I can't even copy any more stuff
into a folder at that point.

What version of Outlook and what type of account? Outlook 97-2002 had an
initial limit of 16K (16,384) items in a folder, but with large table
support, that limit was increased to 64K (65,536). OSTs, however (used with
Exchange) had a 16K folder limit that could not be changed.

If using OL 97 or OL 98-2000 in Corporate and Workgroup mode, click
Tools>Services, select the Personal Folders service and click Properties.
Check "Allow upgrade to large tables".

If using OL 98-2000 in IMO, right-click your Personal Folders file, choose
Properties, click Advanced, and check the "Allow upgrade to large tables".

If using OL 2002, the upgrade for PSTs is automatic, but OSTs still have the
16K folder limit.

I suspect Outlook 2003's PST (and OST) Unicode format eliminates the 16K
limit.
