No, it's not making your system slow.

Wanting to minimize the amount of memory Windows uses is a
counterproductive desire. Windows is designed to use all, or nearly
all, of your memory, all the time, and that's good not bad. Free
memory is wasted memory. You paid for it all and shouldn't want to see
any of it idle and wasted.

Windows works hard to find a use for all the memory you have all the
time. For example if your apps don't need some of it, it will use that
part for caching, then give it back when your apps later need it. In
this way Windows keeps all your memory working for you all the time.

Look elsewhere for the solution to your performance problem. This
isn't it. To start with, what antivirus and anti-spyware programs do
you run, and are they all up to date?

Many thanks for your reply.

Inanswer to your question I run AVG free edition virus protection , spybot &
lavasoft adware - all to no apparent avail ?!?

My feeling is that you are not understanding how a computer uses memory
or the tool provided with Windows XP. This Article may help:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

With regard to your computer please answer these questions.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How much RAM memory? What processor speed? Right click on the My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties any you will the
information on the General ta.

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on your
C drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties to get this
information.

What processor speed?

Hope this helps.

OK, those make it considerably less likely (but not impossible) that
you have a malware problem.

Is this performance problem a new one, or one that you've always had?

What processor do you have? How much RAM do you have?

What programs do you have starting automatically and running in the
background?

Hi there

I have just deleted all by music video files which appears to have made a
big difference !

I am now currently showing -

Commit Charge
Total=342408
Limit=2518528
Peak=499472

RAM memory= 2.20 ghz - 1.00gb

What processor speed= Athlon 64 processor + 3700
How large is your hard disk and how much free space = 188 gb
Used =69.3 gb
Spare 119 gb

Again thanks for your help ?

Doubt it...the number and size of files on your hard drive doesn't have
anything to do with how much memory your computer uses.
