Help via the internet

I run WinXP SP2 and Word XP. When I access the Word Help I get the index, but
when I select a topic, I get the error message that the site isn't available,
I use dial up access.

If I activate my internet connection, I still get the same message and can
not get to any help topic.

I would rather Word looked at the help on the Hard drive, I how do I set
this up.

Thanks

You can set Word to use only offline Help. Use F1 to open the Help task
pane. At the bottom, under "See Also," click on "Online Content Settings."
You can clear all the check boxes if you prefer, but just clearing the one
for "Search online content when connected" will stop Word from trying to
dial up.

I cannot find this option when I type 'F1' and get the help pane. There is no
'see also' or 'online content settings' options. I am running Office XP as
well. How else can I turn off this hang at startup while it tries to connect
to the internet?

These options are available in Word 2003; I don't recall that Word 2002 was
quite so Internet-dependent. It really shouldn't be trying to access the
Internet, I think, so it's possible the Help files aren't properly
installed. I believe Word 2002 does have the Detect and Repair feature in
its install routine, though, so you might try that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried Detect and Repair, and then reinstalled
Word from the XP SBE disk and it still hangs for a good 10-13 seconds before
the Word is usable. I even tried to exit out of Word during these 'hang time'
and Windows gave a 'not responding' error and asked to send an error to
Microsoft. I really would like to know why it's trying so hard to access the
internet.

I don't remember having this problem with Word 2002. Are you running Norton
AntiVirus? If you have not disabled its Office Plug-in, I wonder if perhaps
it is looking for updates. NAV can be very stubborn about trying to connect.

With the help of Zonealarm pro, I have discovered that the site Word is
trying to access is a Verisign Certificate Revocation List
http:\\12.158.80.10
I am using NAV Corporate and it has no Plug-in that I can (or have) setup
with Office XP products, so I think this is not an issue. Does the above
information make sense to you? anyone? Thanks in advance.

Do you have any other add-ins installed that might have expired
certificates? FWIW, NAV can still cause problems in Word. Here's what Office
MVP Beth Melton has to say on the subject:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

Thanks again for the suggestions. Unfortunately, no such dll found so
Symantec CE antivirus must not use that particular route. As far as expired
certificates, I'm not sure what even requires a certificate. I have Adobe
Acrobat Professional 6 installed and it has a Word link at top. As far as I
can tell, Acrobat does not autoupdate as I have disabled it. Thanks again for
the suggestions. I am learning alot if nothing else. If there are any other
suggestions, I am all ears.
