Hi.

I have a 3-month old Mesh computer with Windows XP Media Centre, fully
up-to-date. The computer has 8 USB ports, plus in-built memory card reader.
Everything has been fine until 2 weeks ago. Whilst printing some pages off
eBay my printer started printing out a whole load of code for no apparent
reason. It went through pages and pages of this and the cancel button
wouldn't work so I turned it off to stop it. Since then, the computer does
not recognise the printer, saying that it is not connected, even though it is
connected and the driver still installed. Worse still, none of the USB ports
now recognise anything, including the memory card reader. For example, when
I connect my digital camera, a drive appears to show it is connected, but
when I double click on that drive, the drive is empty. It does not recognise
memory cards at all now.

I have spoken to Mesh who first advised a System Restore back to before the
error occurred, but this did nothing. Next, they updated part of the
registry. That did nothing. Now they are saying that is likely to have been
caused by a Windows Security Update and that lots of people are suffering
from this?!!! They advise reinstalling Windows!!

Has anyone else experienced this problem, or more importantly, does anyone
know how to fix it???!

Please help me someone!!

Thanks.
:-)

Do you see anything unusual in the Device Manager?

You might try running some freeware programs and seeing if they make any
sense out of it.

The Device Manager comes up with an exclamation mark against one of the USB
ports when the printer is plugged in. When the camera is plugged in, an
exclamation mark has also appeared, but in random places!

I've run several Registry Mechanic scans, but nothing has worked. I'll try
your suggestions. Thank you!

The exclamation marks point to a driver problem. Sorry, I don't think such
a problem is caused by errors in the registry. Perhaps it would be time to
reinstall the driver.

I have tried the links that Mike suggested, but they have not helped. I have
also uninstalled the printer and tried reinstalling it, but now it won't
install the driver! It seems to recognise that there is a USB cable plugged
in, and even what the device is, but it can't talk to the device.
Anyone else got any suggestions???

Disconnect all USB devices. Boot the machine. Check Event Viewer and Device
Manager for error messages. If none are listed, I'd buy a new USB flash
drive, ($10.00), and test all USB ports.(Trans fer dummy files back and
forth to confirm proper operation). If all test OK, it's your USB devices.
Test each one separately till you get errors, then reinstall drivers, test
again and replace it if need be. I'd test on another machine to confirm
replacement.

Personally, I think your printer had a brain stroke and died, and it's
shorting out all your other ports. But I'm not there.
