help upgrading

hi,
i have win 98 and i want to upgrade to xp... i have tried
to do the "recommended" install by choosing upgrade, i
have tried formatting 98 and installing xp on a clean hard
drive, i keep having problems. i can't write to microsoft
cuz they ask for a number that i cannot see until i
install xp. i am very confused ... please help.

hi,
it has an amd athlon 1333 mhz, 512 ram, ... i am not sure
whatelse you need but just ask. i am not sure when it or
what it did upgrading to win xp, i just remember it didnt
work... when i formatted 98 and installed xp, i got a blue
screen that said soething abut a hard error... whatever
that is.

What are the specs of the 98 machine? At what point does
the upgrade fail? Are you using a retail version or OEM
version? WinXP home or Pro? the number you are refering
to is that the License Number? That number should be
afixed to the cd cover or the Winxp Book.
