I would like to install retail XP Pro over 98SE. However I can't get
past the hardware check. Whether I try to do the compatibility check or go
straight into install the progress bar completes 10-20% and hangs there. The
computer does not hang, just the program. No error messages. I've let it set
over an hour with no movement in the progress bar.
Hardware. Biostar M6VCG mainboard. I've seen posts of others who use XP
on this board. Biostar has updates for this board that include XP. CPU is
Pentium III/650mHz. Memory 2-128mb Apacer rated at 133mHz, CL3. Hard drive
Quantum 10.2Gb. Video Matrox Millennium G200. Network card Linksys LNE100TX.
1 CD-RW, brand new Digital Research 52x24x52 from Best Buy. Lastly one 3-1/2
floppy. The hard drive, video card, network card and CD-RW are XP OK. BIOS
is the latest.
I've searched the web & groups and found nothing to help. The closest to
a problem in my setup I know of is "only" 1.79Gb of free space on drive C.
XP recommends 1.5Gb for installation. I don't see how that would stop just
running the upgrade analysis check. I tried using one stick of memory and
then the other as well as a third 256mb. generic stick. I disabled USB in
BIOS and made sure the boot sector virus check was also disabled. I removed
the antivirus program in Windows. In MSCONFIG I disabled all but Explorer
and Systray. When I started the network card was not installed. I did that
to make sure I had the latest files as suggested. I do not believe it should
make ANY difference if ANY of my hardware (or software) is XP compatible or
not just to run the check. That's what the upgrade analysis check is for, to
inform me. I reviewed KB article 310064. The only suggestion I haven't tried
is disabling ACPI. How is that done?
This has been running 98SE just fine. I would really appreciate any
ideas/help.
Regards & thanks in advance,
