Help! unresponsive programs, WinMediaPlayer/Outlook/Word. hanging 50% of the tim

Win Med.Player hangs and becomes unresponsive.
Ctrl/Alt/Del shows that two instances of the player are
there (both not responding.) Outlook opens but sticks for
anything between 2 minutes and 20 minutes on the 'this is
registered too.....screen. once its open it works but
occasionally hangs and will not respond. Hanging also
sometimes with Word.
In all these instances it tells me that I have closed an
unresponsive program and offers to send a report which I
have done but ...........well obviously no help from the
M-soft boys.

got any ideas?
