I finally figured out how to use OutLook Express for News Groups, thanks to
some members here, but there are a couple of things I don't quite get.
First, I frequently see answers but not the original question, for example;
Re: Install freezes
But there is no other post with it, not the original question, and no other
replies. Why is that?
Then, I see members being chastised fro not using/signing their names, but
using 'anonymous' instead. What difference does it make? None of the names
are real anyway.
And, how can you tell is someone is posting from the NG's forum or from
something like Outlook Express, and what difference does it make in the
credibility of the poster? I have seen a reference or two that asserts that
one is more credible than the other.

Many repliers do NOT know how to properly reply to a post and create a new post rather than
reply to the thread. Additionally the original post it may have cached-out of the News
Server. Are you using news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general or
are you using your ISP News Server ?

Using a handle (or name) and always using said handle lends legitamacy to the reply. How
can you trust anonymous ? So many post as anonymous who is it ?

You look into the headers.

Hope that helps.

To fix the out of order threads, I have always had to go to the Properties
of the specific newsgroup folder (i.e. drop down the newsgroups list, and
right click on the one that's messed up). Select properties/Local
file/Reset. This basically deletes the whole local cache for the newsgroup,
and redownloads the info fresh. I have to do this about twice a month - bug
in OE.

I don't think newsreader vs CDO automatically implies a credibility
difference. People are encouraged to use a newsreader for their own ease of
use more than anything else.

Most people set up their newsgroups to only show unread messages. You may
have previously read the original. Then, this time you'd only see the
replies. When I thread through the messages I read the ones I'm interested
in and mark ALL messages as read so I won't see them again. Perhaps your
setup is the same. There's not enough room to contain all the messages that
were ever posted in a newsgroup. Depending on usage, older messages are
deleted from the newsgroups.

And no one uses their real name & email address anymore. Spammers would
grab on to their addresses and overload them with spam.

Thanks, everyone, for your answers. I think I have it now. Just one more
question. What does CDO stand for? :)

Its some internal MSoft code, no-one seems to know.

One point I would add for you. These groups get tremendous numbers of
posts - this one maybe 1000 a day. So when you first start with OE,
set its Options - Read to get the max 1000 posts (otherwise it will try
and get the full 90000 or so on the servers). Then if you come in
regularly, have that unchecked so it gets *all* since last time, and
avoid missing ones that matter to you

Thanks for the info, I have the '1000' checked, that was also mentioned in
the 'How to set up OE' for newsgroups, but it didn't mention your next
suggestion. Thanks, again,
lv

Collaborative Data Objects - now, does that make you as smart as the guy
that stayed at a Holiday Inn Express??

I'm not sure if that is an attempt at humor, or if you are trying to insult
me. The reason for asking the question was that I saw many references to
those three letters, and didn't know what they meant. Shortly after my last
post on the subject, in July, I looked on the MSKB to see what I could find,
and what I found was CollaboraTION Data Objects, in reference to , well this
is part of the article.
"Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects for Windows 2000 (CDOSYS) and
Microsoft Collaboration Data Objects for Exchange 2000 (CDOEX) do not
directly provide a way to digitally sign or encrypt a message. The
application programming interface (API) does not expose any functionality to
generate a valid signature. However, you can use the Cryptography API in
combination with CDOSYS or CDOEX to digitally sign and/or encrypt a
message."

From that I surmised the basic meaning of CDO.
If I misinterpreted your reply as rude, rather than humorous, I apologize.
If not, then I don't.

It was TOTALLY an attempt at humor - I am not one to just insult someone,
especially if I have never met them face to face - there is too much of that
going on in NGs where people can hide behind fake names, and I don't go for
that stuff. Please accept my apology if you feel I insulted you!
