Recently I purchased a new computer as a gift for a family member.
Instead of transferring the data from old computer to new I'd like to
add the hard drive instead.

My question is this. After I install the old hard drive and leave the
new one set as the boot device can I still expect to call data from
the old drive? Are there any other actions I should take?

Hopefully my question is clear. Thanks in advance.

best way to do it is not add the "old" harddrive until after os is installed
on new system
once new system is running ok then power it off , add "old" drive and reboot
..
It should just show up and be accessible.

Hi,

This is possible you will have a dual boot scenario. There should be no complications as you have 2 OS's on 2 seperate hard drives instead of having 2 OS's on one hard drive.

IN other words the process you are using is a safer and recommended process.
