i've accidentally created a bunch of shortcut keys by banging my keyboard to
clean it. i don't even know how many i've created but normal typing bring up
different windows or characters.

i'm running xp home edition.

Are you talking about shortcut icons?
Drag into Recycle bin!

Don't know what you're saying?? Explain!!
"but normal typing bring up different windows or characters".

no i mean shortcut "keys". such as, when i hit the a b i get b4 and have to
backspace to get rid of the 4. when i hit my shift key a search window
appears. some of the keys issues have resolved themselves over the course of
the day but not all.

Go to Help and Support Center. Type "shortcut keys" in search field.
Maybe shortcut or sticky keys
If your online, will also search MS KB for related articles

Do you have programmable keyboard?

Hope this is some help.

You may have damaged the keyboard circuits by banging it like that. If
it is not resolved try a new keyboard.
