Help! Tips On Setting Up VPN For Linksys WRV54G?

hi,

I've seen a lot of bad reviews for this router, but I figure it can't
be impossible to configure it for simple access from a WinXP computer
outside the network.

does anyone have any tips for setting this up? I've added users in the
Access Restrictions \ VPN Client Access screen, then from the external
computer created a VPN connection using the WinXP wizard, but I am
always unable to connect.

in the Security \ VPN screen I also tried enabling 'VPN Gateway'. the
only thing this seems to accomplish is disconnecting internal computers
from the internet.

my guess is there is no one setting change that will fix my problem.
but does anyone know of a combination of settings that has been proven
to work?
