I have XP Home. I recently had to do a format of the HD and reinstall
XP due to shut down problems. SP1 is (as far as I can find anyway) not
available. SP1a will not install. I receive an "Installation Error"
and the program exits. I had SP1 installed previously and there was no
problem with the install or its operation.

I have done the following trying to get it to install:

Checked the HD for SpyWare and Virus (Norton with the latest updates)

Disabled everything in the system tray,

Went in through msconfig and did a "clean boot",

D/L SP1a from 2 different locations in case the D/L had gotten corrupted.

Tried doing a restore (Replace only if the file older) from a good tape
backup that has SP1.

Where can I find SP1 or can someone tell me how to get SP1a to install ?

Computer Configuration

AOpen Max4C mobo w/on board LAN enabled
Intel 3.0 processor w/Hyper Threading
Maxtor 80 gig 133 HD
512 DDR 400 ram
Gainward video NVidia TI4800 SE chipset (128 meg ram)
Creative Labs Audigy sound card
MSI CD-RW
Generic 16x DVD
Mitsumi 3.5 floppy
Seagate ST20000 tape backup

Thanks

What error(s) are in the svcpack.log file? Are you downloading the network
install locally or trying the web download? How far does the installer get
before it dies on you? If you havent tried the full network install I would
try pulling it down locally and running it.

Hi Ted, I too have had problems with SP1 and 1a. It is
availabe as a CD from Microsoft. Or at least it was about
5 months ago.

I installed it and it seems to run OK EXCEPT that on
shutdown the computer goes to the blue "Windows is
Shutting Down" screen and hangs up there. Does not auto
power off. The front panel power switch is useless I
either pull the plug or turn it off by using the surge
protector.

I know it is something in the SP1 because when I
uninstall SP1 the power off works slowly but it does
finally shut down.

I've put up a post here to see if I can get help too.

Lots of luck to us both..
Dan

great (and sometimes not so great) words of knowledge:

The svcpack.log is saying that the majority of the files (OEM) it is
trying to replace are not digitally signed and will not be replaced.
The FEW remaining files it says are signed by OEM5.CAT and will not be
replaced. Num tickets for inventory 194078 Service Pack 1 cancelled.

I am not sure what that all means, but I think it is saying it will not
replace the original files FROM THE XP CD because they are not digitally
signed !!

Where do I go from here ? Reformat and reload AGAIN ?

Could be a permissions issue. Check the setupapi.log as well (at the
bottom) and see if its logging any errors about permissions. I have also
seen this exact error is the Windows or C:\ are marked as hidden. If you
happened to have marked them hidden, uncheck them and see what happens.

The *only* difference between SP 1 and SP1a is that SP1a leaves out the
Java Virtual machine.

All you references do not make it clear whether you are getting a *full*
'Network' version of the pack, or are trying ot rely on the express
method. Which is going to download patches individually as it
considers needed - and if it runs into difficultly is liable to give
trouble.

A couple of additional things to make sure of:
Empty the folder windows\system32\catroot2
by renaming it and rebooting to a clean version
(which can give rise to spurious messages about Cryptographic services)

Disable all anti-virus and firewall etc in their own settings. Also if
you have any program that changes the splash screen, or provides more
styles by modifying the system files (esp Styles-XP), uninstall it

If you ever installed XP-Antispy, it disables a dll XSP1 needs, so just
in case, Start - Run and run
regsvr32 licdll.dll
regsvr32 regwizc.dll

Start - run Msconfig.exe
Uncheck the Load Startup items; and in Services page check 'hide
Microsoft services' and uncheck those lines left. Put them back when
all is up and running

OK, and reboot to a clean machine from which to run the SP1 setup.

I did a complete backup of the HD. Then deleted the partition and
reloaded XP and the minimum drivers necessary to get on the net. SP1a
THEN installed with no problems. I then did a restore with the "replace
only if newer" option checked. Everything is working fine now. It is a
PIA, but it works.
