help someone please

ok my computer has a blue bar on the left hand side of the desktop screen saying folder tasks, other places and details. it is for the desktop but shouldn't be there. its the same one as u see on the left hand side when u click the desktop icon. im using windows xp. when u try and click on it nothing happens. please help as i have tried everything i can think of
